The DoFuss Podcast – Reaching for the Stars

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

Busy week. The combination of gaming, birthday parties and work left both I and Darren tired, unfocused and recording later than usual. There was a plan for the podcast formed at some point during the week but in honesty only about half of that plan could be salvaged from my sleep deprived consciousness.

Fortunately Darren did manage to line up an interview (mentioned last week). To accompany this we also have some clips from the upcoming DoFussUS podcast with Jad and Chad.

Most of the regular segments are still in too. There’s a lot of what we’ve been playing and the usual news. The main topic (such as it is) focuses on game age rating and their effectiveness as guidance for parents. Unfortunately we were a little short of time today so no Darrens Old Games, so if you were looking forward to the Robocop 3 retrospective you are all out of luck till next time.

I hope you enjoy it and as always feel free to comment, leave feedback or write an iTunes review.

Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix (360, PS3)

Saturday, December 6th, 2008

Street Fighter 2. Excited? If the answer is ‘no’ then this is not for you. HD Remix, for those unfamiliar, is little more than a facelift to one of the franchises greatest iterations. A familiarity and love of the game are assumed and if you are lacking these then wait for Street Fighter 4 which is prettier and more accessible.

Those more familiar with the series may appreciate the less cosmetic changes made better then I as my experience with Super SF2. The majority of balances made here are for tournament players. They are almost imperceptible to those who lack a disturbingly intimate knowledge of the game. Suffice to say that it is well balanced, verses loses feel fair, and leave you with a desire to tune your skills.

Really this is for hardcore players and series fans who want some challenging online play to tide them over until SF4.

Podcast 3 – 22/08/2008

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008

We don’t manage to discuss every thing on the menu despite talking for an hour and a half. It’s Wii parties for starters, Street Fighter 4 and recent XBLA games for the main course with a ‘games as art’ discussion for dessert.

By then you should be full so be happy we decided leave the fighting games retrospective till next time.

Street Fighter 4 (arcade)

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

Street Fighter 2 was the first real two player game I owned, and the months of competitive play with friends cemented it in my heart. Thus the announcement of Street Fighter 4 gripped me with a fear that my youth was about to be desecrated.

I shouldn’t have worried. It’s awesome.

A subjective opinion, but one I am confident will be shared by series fans. It manages to capture the original’s depth and simplicity while introducing new tactical elements that don’t detract from the magic.

Currently the original ‘Turbo’ cast is back plus 4 SNK look alike additions, with the promise of more to come (there is also an appalling new boss). Unfortunately at the moment it’s unbalanced. Whilst Sagat is kick-your-ass crazy others seem underpowered. But this is the benefit of the arcade release, Capcom will use it to balance and perfect the game before most even play it.
