InFamous Review on Playdevil (PS3)

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

I wrote this review soon after InFamous came out for Playdevil.com and they have finally posted it. Since then I have had the chance to play through again on the ‘good’ path and it is worth mentioning that I felt a tad cheated. The game was still incredibly entertaining but the two paths seemed completely arbitrary. Outcomes were essentially the same whatever you did and only served to alter things cosmetically. It is not the case that I needed the game’s moral choices to yield any notably different results, but it was one of the titles major selling points so I felt somewhat indignant upon discovering that it wasn’t really.

Any way the review is up and if you are interested you should go and have a look. Hopefully tomorrow will see the developers Galloping Ghost get back to me with an interview on Dark Presence so check back soon for that. That should also mark service returning to normal here on the site, at least until the Tokyo Game Show.

“You begin in the Neon, a more residential area. Buildings here are relatively small, never much above eight stories. It serves as a suitable training area as you acquire your powers. Initially you are limited to a number of lightening attacks, but the more you play the more manoeuvrability you become as grinds and floating abilities are unlocked. The ‘Neon’ [the first area of the game] is constructed with these movement restrictions in mind, packing buildings more closely together, and limiting their height. Once all of your powers are unlocked the areas become more vertical as you fast become able to cross entire areas of the map at lightening speed (no pun intended) gliding and grinding above over the city.”

Gaming in Japan

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

I just had an article go up on Playdevil. There are a few lines that looking back I would edit (the one about Japan being a gaming Mecca is a little ham-fisted in retrospect) but I can’t get at it to make any changes, which in a way is quite liberating!

Here is a short excerpt…

Den Den Town, my geek filled second home.

Den Den Town, my geek filled second home.

“In the shrinking world of the Internet we now feel that if we have an interest in another countries culture we understand their habits, predilections and biases. We’ll I am here to tell you that perhaps your preconceptions about Japan and its gaming culture are wrong.

Okay, maybe not wrong, but misguided…”
