Metro 2033 (PC) in 250 words.
Metro 2033 is a first person shooter developed by the Ukrainian development studio A4. Based on a Russian comic of the same name, it is set beneath the streets of a post apocalyptic Moscow, in the city’s subway system.

More hopeful than it should be.
Metro 2033 reminds me of my first car. An old Ford Escort that by the end of its time with me it had hit a skip, gone through a fence and crashed twice. But like a faithful dog it kept trying to please right up to the end, and I loved it. You see despite the front bumper hanging off, the buckled boot and shattered indicator light, my Escort still worked and despite its many problems so does Metro 2033.
Like the makeshift weapons and equipment of Metro 2033 nothing in the game works perfectly, but somehow its ramshackle nature adds to the atmosphere of the derelict environment. Combat lacks impact but this is explained away by a dependence on reclaimed ammunition, and constant restrictions to the field of view is justified by the darkness of the Metro’s tunnels and the gasmask that is required in the irradiated surface of Moscow.
Lonely and moody, it is strange that Metro 2033 leaves me feeling so optimistic. Its linear comic inspired story holds an undercurrent of hope that is almost refreshing. Life will adapt and endure, and even confined below ground lacking even basic creature comforts, communities will form and fight to protect each other from adversity.
