The DoFuss Podcast – NintenDon King

February 10th, 2009 Posted by Alex Beech

It is a big one, pushing the hour and six minute GarageBand gives us to its limits. We have a few new jingles, but do not be scared (or at least try not to be; the ‘What Have You Been Playing?’ jingle takes a bit of getting used to).

First I must apologise, we are sellouts. I hate to admit it but we have to pay the bills somehow. This week expect a smattering of adverts through out the show. Please don’t feel compelled to run out and buy any of the featured products, but try to understand the necessity of their existence in the show.

This time around Darren has played more relevant games than I, so it is a mobile gaming-heavy start to the show. As ever we discuss news, including the upcoming Yakuza 3’s cast list. Following this I have a little rant about localisation of games, from Japan to the West (and vice versa). All before finishing up with Darren’s old games, this week featuring Hunter for the Amiga and Atari ST.

There can definitely be scary handheld games, but the problem is that the mood is often incompatible with the times I play my handheld system so I lose interest. I found the initial setting and first few minutes of Dementium: The Ward (NDS) to be deeply fucked up, but my unwillingness to deal with that nightmarish environment while riding the train to work forced me to put it down.

Another horror-themed game is Touch the Dead, a budget rail shooter that uses the DS touch screen for precision aiming – just touch where you want the bullets to go. The catch is that you must reload manually by touching and dragging ammo into your gun, which sounds like what Darren is talking about on the iPhone. I wouldn’t call Touch the Dead scary though, it’s just kinda fun for what it is.

Also, here’s a winner for Nintendo of Japan: Nintendogeza, where you can use your DS to bow repeatedly and grovel before others for forgiveness. If you can remember which 80s cartoon had a robot named Grovel (which did just that whenever it was called), give yourself a pat on the back from me.

Damn it! I had to look it up. Danger Mouse? Really? I’d forgotten all about Quark and Grovel.
