The DoFuss Podcast – Architect Errol Fitzroy’s Black Plague First Person Morris Dancing Extreme

January 27th, 2009 Posted by Alex Beech

On time and ready to go. In an attempt not to walk in the footsteps of giants we decided to abandon the original discussion of reviews and scores at the last minute and instead focus on the recent Japanese top selling games and Final Fantasy 13 news as seen in Famitsu. I say ‘seen in Famitsu’ because I can’t read most of it so it’s more an impressions piece than a factual commentary.

As always we also discuss some recent news and dip into ‘Darren’s Old Games’. This podcast Darren reminisces about hours spent floating around lost in Elite on the Amiga, and I reminisce about watching him floating around lost in Elite.

We also invent the Wii game name generator, so if you come up with one please post it in the comments. The format is simple;
Job > Name > Event > Game genre > Event > Generic game word
The results sound worryingly like next years best selling game as long as you attach ‘for Wii’ and ‘by Nintendo’ to the box art. Enjoy.

I played through Exit DS last year in Japanese. I thoroughly enjoyed it as a puzzle game, although its resemblance to a platformer does make the character’s limitations seem frustrating at times. Now that I have a PSP, I’ve been considering that version as well. I heard it looks and sounds much nicer.

On print surviving in Japan while it dies quickly in the West, I think it has a lot to do with the relatively limited penetration of the Internet in this country. But that could be the subject of an entire podcast until itself.

Somewhat creepily, your message arrived just as n+ arrived in the post. I look forward to its individual charms.

I also commend you on such a sober and intelligent response to a ridiculous podcast.

I don’t know how limited internet in Japan is compared to other countries. Probably the percentages are similar to the US and England though I think its function is more limited. Less internet shopping because of a reduced number of credit cards and less content available in the native language are undoubtedly huge factors in this.

I also believe that in Japan people are more used to carrying a magazine around. Much like newspapers in the West continue to thrive (well cope) in Japan there is a familiarity and comfort with Manga and Magazines that I have not seen in other countries (helped of course by the fact that most city populations rely on public transport for their daily commute freeing up time to read). I think this plays a large part in the continued popularity of print.

But yes, a big topic and one I should maybe revisit in the near future. I had been thinking about it in light of recent events so this could be a good starting point.

Also to second Darren’s comment, well done Feitclub for managing to find the small pieces of real content sprinkled into the podcast.

Hey, if I didn’t like the show I wouldn’t keep coming back. I think you guys are right to avoid keeping up with the mega-podcasts out there with all reviews and current events. Those folks can do an hour of “whatcha been playin” because they get paid to do that sort of thing. You and me? No such luck! So keep it breezy and talk about whatever gaming you can get done.

I look forward to hearing/reading more about Resistance. I went straight into part 2 without playing the first one and I love it. Coop more than single player, but either way I am entertained.

Oh, and I submit Professor Blackbeard’s Sweaty Independence Day Racing Hoe-Down for your consideration.

I don’t think the tone will be changing much so I’m glad you’re enjoying it.

I’m sure we can do something about your first Resistance situation. It’s actually an entertaining game just unapologetically linear. I’m actually playing it through again to get the extra weapons and see if I missed any files. I have to pick up Resistance 2 to try out that online, but currently on a Warhawk kick.

Great game title, particularly like ‘Sweaty Independence Day’ part. It conjures up vivid images of Bill Pullman for some reason.
