Ur-Quan Masters (PC)

December 19th, 2008 Posted by Alex Beech

After the flurry of holiday releases it’s nice to be able to indulge in some old favorites. The Star Control series was a favorite of mine for two-player shenanigans. The Ur-Quan Masters have taken the free source code of Star Control 2 and decided to converted it for PC. Adding online play, new music and making if free.

It is a one-on-one top-down space shooter. Ships aren’t balanced but aren’t meant to be, this is fleet combat. Each ship handles differently with a variety of weapons and specials. Even the back stories are worth a read, even if they borrow heavily from popular science-fiction.

The story mode is tough. Resource collection heavy, it lacks the satisfaction of melee scuffles. Two-player is still incredible, but suffers from lag if you try and play internationally.

It’s free, it’s fun and if your reading this you can probably run it on your PC.
