Gears of War 2 (360) » Marcus Phoenix
Gears puts you in control of Marcus Phoenix. A man who sounds like he has been smoking since the age of four and with enough facial scaring to make John Merrick look cute. He conforms to every conceivable marine-in-space-armor stereotype. Yet he has managed to develop some individuality. Problematically this persona is rather two dimensional. Thus when trust in to emotional situations he is faced with either being callus, or breaking expectation. Neither helps him develop as a character, but then does it really need to?
Actually it’s the opposing army, the Locust, who are more interesting. Maybe it’s because Epic hasn’t tried to give them any real voice beyond that of the rather enigmatic queen who gives only the vaguest of ideas why they are locked in conflict with the humans. It leaves you wondering about their origins, culture and they the fuck they don’t use a better moisturizer.
