Gears really is designed to be played co-op. Your partner, Dom, is always with you whether or not another player chooses to control him. This time though however a few changes have been made to make the game feel more complete in the single player. Now when downed in single player it is no longer the instant death of the original, revival by an AI companion is now possible, something notable from its absence in the first game. This makes the harder modes a little more forgiving without feeling less frantic.

While on the topic of co-op I would be remised not to mention the new ‘horde’ mode. Here you can team up with up to four friends online to fight wave after wave of ‘Locusts’ at ever increasing difficulty. A fun challenge, and more importantly a nice compromise between a four player co-op campaign and another year in development.
