Even on the original Gears, Epic touted the professional writer that they had hired. This means either they heavily edited the writers work, or they should get their money back.

This time Epic has been trying to play up the story again. It’s improved, but that sets a very low bar. It remains shallow.

I don’t find this off putting. Sometimes all I want is mindless action, this is just that. Pure escapism. The story does little more than provide a frame for the action. It provides motivation and enough intrigue to maintain interest, even if the gruff marines struggle to illicit much emotion.

Honestly though your protagonist, Marcus, is a grunt, how much of the overall picture did you think he’d get? Maybe Epics really clever and Gears three will be an RTS where you are promoted to General and find out what’s going on. But I doubt it.
