Japan’s Handheld Market » PSP
It’s strange to see how the PSP has fared in Japan. For months following its release it was constantly sold out. Demand was through the roof. The problem was supply. Sony had trouble manufacturing units. The trouble continued for so long that some even speculated that Sony was trying to artificially create buzz. If they were it failed. By the time supply became available people had decided the DS maybe the better choice.
Thus for a long time PSP held a strange position. It became popular with the young and wealthy who wanted to show off their shiny toy and modders who wanted to pirate games. It took several years but they have finally found their place. With a few hardware revisions helping sales and the release of Monster Hunter it has become the home of the hardcore gamer. For a week or two it even out sold the DS.
